Nabajyoti College lies in Kalgachia , the centre of the west of Barpeta
and the east of Bongaigaon districts of Assam , one
of the
remotest corners of Assam. Starting with 35 students in 1971,
the college is now turning out to be a bigger "Workshop of Human
Resource Development" in the state of Assam with more than 1500
students enrolled now.
The word 'NABA-JYOTI' stands for 'NABA' - New and 'JYOTI' -
Light or Knowledge. This was named NABAJYOTI COLLEGE,
KALGACHIA to hold that exact meaning of new light by the then
local MLA , a scholar and a minister of Assam , Marhum Ataur
Rahman. The foundation stone of this college was laid by the
late honourable president of India Marhum Fakar Uddin Ali Ahmed.
The NAAC - the National Accreditation and Assessment Council has
awarded grade 'B' to the college in the year 2003 after
inspecting and assessing the performance of the college in
imparting higher education, extension services through NCC, NSS
,
Bharat Scouts and Guides and students union, creating awareness
for health and hygiene in the region, quality and efficiency of
the teachers and the performances they have shown. Overall,
Nabajyoti College has been tirelessly involved in spreading the
light of knowledge amongst students from that region and
elsewhere too.
As years have gone by , the college has set standards to follow
and ideals to learn.
The college conducts courses in
Arts and the Sciences. Amongst the courses are the two years
higher secondary courses in both
Arts and Science under the Assam Higher Secondary Education
Council (AHSEC), the three years degree courses in Arts and
Science under the aegis of Gauhati University , diploma course
in Computer Applications and a vocational course in industrial
fish
and fishery science (degree level).
